A.1 קדרנית is an adverb conveying ‘darkly, dully, dimly’. Its only attested OT occurrence is in the collocation הלך קדרנית. This idiom may refer to the custom of wearing dark, soiled clothing as an expression of sorrow, or it may be used metaphorically for the despondent demeanour of those sorely troubled by an oppressive situation. Conducting oneself in this solemn manner was a way of entreating God’s help; it was associated with piety, especially in the post-exilic community. The context is necessary to determine which sense is conveyed by this idiom.
